The Belgian government's plan to slap a tax on packaging that "does not respect the climate" is purely budgetary with no environmental basis. That is the continuing message of industry, faced with a tax, albeit one not planned until July 2007. "Industry is fully against the tax," said Renaud Batier of the European Association of Producers of Steel for Packaging (APEAL). "We have never seen the environmental benefit of such a tax in Denmark; it just made products more expensive and did not improve the environmental side of the product."
