European Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas has slammed the outcome of the Environment Committee's vote on the draft ambient air quality directive on 21 June (see this issue for details), especially the decision to grant up to 10 years extra for member states to meet pollution standards. The Committee voted through the clean air for Europe directive, calling for stricter levels for PM (parniculate matter) 10 and 2.5 and setting, for the first time, targets for PM 2.5. However it also adopted a number of amendments increasing the flexibility for member states to meet the rules, causing concern in some quarters.
