Dimas calls for changes to GMO procedures

More account needs to be taken of the environmental and health effects of genetically modified crops (GMOs) in the longer term before they are approved for cultivation, according to two European Commissioners. Differences in opinion over the EU's approach to GMOs emerged between the Agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel and Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas at a conference in Austria last week. The latter called for the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) to take a more transparent and scientific approach to its approval of GMOs.
