Member states doing poorly in urban waste water treatment

The urban waste water treatment directive is one of the key pieces of legislation in the field of water pollution, but it still raises significant implementation challenges in the EU member states. This was the message of Peter Gammeltoft from DG Environment as he discussed the state of implementation of EU environmental legislation in front of the European Parliament.rnSpeaking at the environment committee on 26 November, Mr Gammeltoft explained that this directive, which was adopted in 1991, was a precondition for attaining the water quality objectives of the water framework directive. Yet "the lack of compliance remains significant", he noted.
