Council to adopt common position on mercury soon

The Council is poised to adopt its formal first stage - or 'common' - position on a proposed regulation banning mercury exports and providing for safe storage in the EU. National officials have cleared the text ready to put it to an upcoming Council for clearance without discussion (as an "A" point). Last June's Environment Council thrashed out a compromise deal on the proposal, allowing ministers to adopt a political agreement, which will now be turned into the formal common position.
