By-products, end of waste criteria, the waste hierarchy and disposal versus recovery are the main issues that need to be tackled under the revision of the waste framework directive (WFD). This was the message of Dutch MEP Hans Blokland (Independence/Democracy Group), speaking at a FEAD (European Federation of Waste Management and Environmental services) conference in Athens last week.rnMr Blokland, who was rapporteur (draftsman) on the thematic strategy on waste prevention and recycling, welcomed the June Council's common position on the aims of the directive, the principles of proximity and self-sufficiency and on the fact that Council had accepted the five step waste hierarchy and had made no changes to the definition of waste itself.
