MEPs clear amendment to separate by-products from waste

The European Parliament this week cleared a key amendment to the waste framework directive revision that would clearly distinguish between by-products and waste - although green groups say that it could create a legal loophole (see story this issue). The amendment is crucial for the food industry which sells on many by-products to different sectors for use in producing other goods such as animal feed, cosmetics, fertilisers, Pharmaceuticals and biofuels. Without the amendment some member states will continue to classify by-products as waste, meaning that those generating by-products could lose out on a potentially profitable sideline and firms using them a source of raw materials.
