EFSA scientific integrity under fire

The Commission has defended the scientific integrity of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) as its judgements came under fire at a conference on the future of the CAP last week. Despina Spanou, Deputy Head of Cabinet to Health Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou, told the COPA-COGECA conference that the opinions given by EFSA are purely scientific and independent of the Commission. Attendees at the conference questioned the integrity of judgements that EFSA makes on issues such as genetically modified organism approvals, nanotechnology and pesticides.
