MEPs give more time to the car industry on CO_2 emissions

MEPs in the industry committee of the European Parliament voted on Monday to give three extra years for European carmakers to meet EU curbs on CO_2 emissions. They voted 35 votes in favour and 21 against to impose emission curbs on 60 per cent of the European car fleet initially in 2012 and raising the share of vehicles covered gradually to 100 per cent in 2015. The European Commission had proposed to introduce the cap - from around 160g/km currently to 120g/km on all new cars sold in the EU in 2012.
