MEPs demand impact study on Baltic's Nord Stream pipeline

The European Parliament this week demanded an environmental impact study into the Nord Stream gas pipeline project, following a petition from 30,000 people. The project, part of the TransEuropean Energy Network (TEN-E), aims to construct a pipeline carrying natural gas under the Baltic sea. Spanish Green MEP David Hammerstein commented afterwards: "This sends a message to Nord Stream and the European Commission that this giant scale project in the shallow Baltic Sea - already in an alarming state due to decades of pollution - cannot be carried out without a truly independent and objective environmental impact assessment."
