MEPs call for stricter renewables rules and targets

The European Commission should go for stricter enforcement rules and binding interim targets in the proposed renewables directive. That was the message of MEPs speaking at the annual European Wind Energy Conference this week. Danish Socialist MEP Britta Thomsen, who will be the shadow rapporteur for this report in the industry committee, told the 1 April meeting that she would push for binding interim targets to increase the share of renewables in EU energy consumption to 20 per cent by 2020. Under the proposal as it stands, the only binding target is the final one for 2020.
