Portugal to end mixed plastic recycling to avoid bankruptcy

Portugal's green dot scheme Pontoverde will stop collecting and recycling mixed plastics such as yoghurt or butter pots, in a bid to avoid bankruptcy, it announced this week. Environmental associations, waste management companies and the Environment ministry all hit out at the announcement. The ministry called for an "urgent meeting" this Friday (25 September). A spokesperson for Valorsul said that "the decision was a surprise, it was unilateral", with another waste management company, Lipor, saying the decision would have a "very negative effect".
