European Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas and the outgoing Czech president of the Environment Council Ladislav Miko insisted lastrnweek that soil is an issue that the EU should be handling.rnDimas and Miko spoke out at the post Environment Council press conference in answer to a question from EE&PL about why have a soil directive when as some member states such as the UK and the Netherlands argued this was not a cross border issue and therefore not a matter for the EU. The two member states had been among those that had refused to accept an EU directive in a debate on the issue at the Council meaning that the proposal remains in limbo.
