Commission closes drinking water case after France complies

The European Commission said on 24 June that it had closed infringement proceedings against France over nitrate contamination of drinking water in Brittany after the country took action to comply with EU rules.rnA statement said that the European Court of Justice (ECJ) condemned France in March 2001 for breaching EU rules on the quality of surface water used to produce drinking water (Directive 75/440/EEC). The judgment was made on the grounds that 37 water abstraction points located in Brittany were affected by nitrate concentrations above the EU water quality standard of 50 mg/1.
