A ramped up version of the Eco Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) came into force this week after the Regulation bringing in the revised scheme was published in the EU's Official Journal at the end of last month (L 342 of 22.12.2009).rnThe Regulation (1221/2009) aims to boost the number of participants from either private companies or public bodies in the scheme, which has been flagging since first set up in 2001. As an incentive to sign up, the Regulation allows participants that manage to improve their environmental performance to benefit from fewer regulatory controls and reduced costs.
