Netherlands calls on Commission to draft EU nanotechnology law

The Netherlands is calling on the European Commission to draft comprehensive EU legislation to regulate nanomaterials including a definition, mandatory register and eventually a risk assessment system. The call came at the Environment Council as EE&PL was going to press (see next story). The Dutch minister was to present an information notice on 'Risks associated with nanomaterials' in the "any other business" section of the 21 June meeting. The note kicks off by acknowledging that nanotechnology "is a cutting-edge technology with great potential in a wide range of applications, including Pharmaceuticals and solar cells." It also points out that some EU industries are leaders in the nanotech field.
