Top EU officials slam energy efficiency regulations

In a surprising move, Peter Vis, Head of Cabinet of EU Climate Commissioner Connie Hedegaard, has slammed the draft Energy Efficiency Directive saying that it could undermine the EU's Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). While Commission officials rarely comment on draft EU laws, this is the second time that a top official from DG Climate Action has expressed concern that new energy efficiency regulations, due on 22 June, could clash with the ETS by applying not only to buildings and vehicles, but also to industrial sectors already covered by the ETS. They say that this could lead to a significant drop in the price of carbon permits.
