Commission consultation: More than 70 per cent supports plastic bag ban

The much maligned plastic carrier bag suffered another blow last week, with figures published by the European Commission stating that 70 per cent of those responding to its public consultation saw a "need" for an EU ban. The potential ban on the disposable plastic bag was scheduled to be raised by the Italian and Austrian delegations at this week's Environment Council. Austria had already initiated a debate on the bags at the 14 March Council.
