Italy to allow recycled PET in soft drinks bottles

Italy has notified a draft decree to the European Commission to implement the law about quality standards for recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in food contact materials. The decree, currently only available in Italian, comprises a single article. On "standstill" (a three-month period for comment and/or objection by the Commission, member states or other interested parties) until 16 January 2012, to extend Article 13 of the decree of the Minister of Health of 21 March 1973, as amended by Ministerial Decree 113 of 18 May 2010 to permit the use of recycled (PET) in soft drinks bottles. Adoption of the regulation is necessary to allow national companies to operate under the same conditions as companies in other member states, in anticipation of the adoption of EU decisions authorising the recycling processes provided for in Article 13 of Regulation (EC) 282/2008 on recycled plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with foods.
