Commission admits energy efficient products need less VAT

The sale of energy efficiency products should be boosted by a lower rate of value added tax (VAT) and if this cannot be done then the EU needs to consider changing its legislation, European Energy Commissioner Giinther Oettinger said this week.At the 11 September debate on the energy efficiency directive in the European Parliament plenary session in Strasbourg, Oettinger admitted that the current British situation where the government is fighting an EU ruling that it must raise VAT on energy efficiency products from 5 to 20 per cent was not a good one.
