Malta: Huge building waste increase in 2010

The amount of waste generated in Malta in 2010 increased by 48 per cent in 2010 compared to 2009 - mainly due to a sharp increase in construction waste, according to the government's Environmental Indicators report.While the amount of construction and demolition waste declined by 70 per cent between 2008 and 2009, a spike in building permits across the island has meant that this type of waste is once again on the increase, says the report released last week. The amount of construction and demolition waste that is being recycled went up from 4 per cent in 2009 to 7.7 per cent in 2010.
