The European Commission has criticised the definition of nanomaterial in the newly-adopted biocides regulation for not being in line with a 2011 recommendation. Last October (see EE&PL. October 26, 2011, pp 1-4) the Commission laid down a standard EU definition of nanomaterial, with the aim of harmonising understanding of the term between different pieces of EU legislation. Nevertheless, it also acknowledged at the time that some specific laws might need a more tailored definition.
