The Netherlands is close to ending the system of deposits on plastic bottles after junior environment minister Joop Atsma worked out a deal on waste disposal and recycling with the Dutch packaging industry and the municipalities last week. Under the deal, aimed at recycling more packaging waste and using fewer resources, new targets have been agreed between the government, the industry and the Association of Dutch Municipalities (VNG). One of the new targets is to recycle 52 per cent of plastic packaging waste.
