Spain: Study claims 80 per cent of landfilled waste recoverable

A Spanish study, published on 18 November, has found that 81 per cent of mixed waste that goes to landfill could, if managed well, be a recoverable resource. The report by non-governmental organisations (NGOs) Ecologistas en Accion (Ecologists in Action), Friends of the Earth, the Foundation for Waste Prevention and Responsible Consumption and deposit campaign group Retorna found that 54 per cent of that recoverable waste is organic matter, 8.5 per cent is paper and board, 5 per cent is glass, 13 per cent lightweight packaging and 0.5 per cent is wood.
