France: Households using PAYT happy with system

Households using a pay-as-you-throw (PAYT) system are happy with the scheme, according to a survey carried out by France's consumer organisation CLCV on behalf of French Environment and Energy Agency ADEME. Four cities in France are currently experimenting with a pilot PAYT system in a bid to comply with the Grenelle 1 law which requires all municipalities to introduce such a system from next year. Currently PAYT remains marginal in France with only 124 communes using the system (affecting some 3.7 million citizens in August 2012 according to ADEME). The rest, which represents about 90 per cent of all municipalities, use a tax system based on the value of the house rather than on the amount of waste produced.
