Northern Ireland: Municipal waste recycling on the up

The municipal recycling rate in Northern Ireland increased to 42.1 per cent in 2013, meaning that less than half of the country's waste now goes to landfill, according to new figures released by the government. Household waste recycling has also reached a new high of 42.7 per cent. According to Northern Ireland's Environment Minister Mark Durkan, some 211,650 tonnes of household waste were collected in Northern Ireland, an increase of 0.9 per cent on the same period last year. Of all household waste collected, 21.2 per cent was recycled and 21.5 per cent was composted. The other 9 per cent was used for energy generation. Compostable waste accounted for 47.5 per cent of all waste collected for recycling, and combined with paper and card (18.2 per cent) these material types accounted for the majority of material collected for recycling.
