Germany succeeds in blocking deal on car CO_2 standards

The German government has succeeded in delaying the approval of an EU agreement on CO_2 emission standards for cars. The agreement was reached on 24 June (see also story in this week's News Review), but following the personal intervention of German chancellor Angela Merkel late last Wednesday night, a vote on the deal by EU member state representatives scheduled for 27 June was instead struck off the agenda at the last minute and postponed.
