Commission proposes CSR accounting rules

Large companies could be required to disclose information on how green and socially responsible they are under a shake up to EU accounting rules that the European Commission proposed last week. Under the 16 April proposal, large companies with more than 500 employees would be required to disclose relevant and material environmental and social information, including respect for human rights and treatment of employees in their annual reports. "The approach taken ensures administrative burdens are kept to a minimum. Concise information which is necessary for understanding a company's development, performance or position would be made available rather than a fully-fledged and detailed 'sustainability' report," a Commission statement on the proposals explained.
