US: Biotech labelling bill dies,but Wal-Mart, PepsiCo and others eye federal law

The New Mexico Senate at the end of last month quashed a genetically modified (GM) labelling bill endorsed by campaigners Food & Water Watch (F&WW) and allied national groups, reports our sister publication Food Chemical News. However, labelling advocates reported attending a meeting with United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials last month in which the agency appeared receptive to the idea of a federal GM labelling law, and major food companies indicated willingness to call a truce in the labelling battle.
