Council to back GMO cultivation law with national bans

The 12 June Environment Council is set to back a four-year old proposal allowing member states to ban cultivation of EU-approved genetically modified organisms (GMOs) on their territories, under a compromise deal brokered by the Greek Presidency. The agreement, which breaks four years of deadlock, would allow the national bans on cultural or socio-economic grounds, as in the original European Commission proposal, but extends the list of possible reasons to for example national agricultural policy. It also extends the provision for ont-out to annlv to licence renewals for GMOs that have already been approved, notably Monsanto's MON810 corn.
