Sweden takes Commission to EU Court over EDC failings

Sweden is taking the European Commission to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) over its failure to set criteria for determining what substances are endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). The Commission had December 2013 deadlines to set these criteria under the biocidal products and plant protection products (pesticides) regulations. A month before the deadlines, the Commission said that it needed more time to draw up the criteria, particularly because it wanted to carry out an impact assessment. Although the EDC criteria were for these two specific regulations, they were seen as leading the way for other areas such as food packaging (food contact materials).
