Land and forests under threat, new report reveals

Land the size of Poland and Sweden will be needed to produce crops and wood for Europe's bioenergy needs by 2030, according to research released as EE&PL went online (28 May). This latest research follows two other studies equally scathing of the EU's current land use and calling on the European Commission to change its bioenergy policy (see story below). The new analysis by Vienna University of Economics and Business for Friends of the Earth Europe (FoEE) shows how Europe's consumption of crops and wood for transport fuel, heating and electricity (collectively termed bioenergy) is set to double by 2030, exerting unparalleled and unsustainable new pressures on the world's land and forests, FoEE said in a statement under embargo on Monday.
