US: First state approves GM food labelling law

The US state of Vermont has become the first in the nation to approve legislation that will require the labelling of foods derived from genetically modified (GM) crops, our sister publication Agrow reports. Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin last week signed the bill into law, following overwhelming approval by the state Senate and House of Representatives in April, despite the threat of an imminent legal challenge by food and GM seed companies. Unlike labelling bills passed by Maine and Connecticut, the Vermont measure does not require other states to act before its requirements enter into effect.
