Epa Interagency Policy On Beneficial Use Of Municipal Sewage Sludge On Federal Land

The Federal government seeks to promote the cost-effective use of recycled materials in American society. One such material, municipal sewage sludge, has been used extensively as a fertilizer and soil conditioner in this nation and elsewhere over a number of years. Municipal sewage sludge is any residue removed during the treatment of municipal waste-water and domestic sewage. Recently, there has been some uncertainty about the policy of the Federal government toward the beneficial use of municipal sewage sludge. This statement is intended to clarify for the public the Federal government's policy. It also provides guidance to Federal land management agencies, with respect to the beneficial use of municipal sewage sludge on Federal lands. These agencies may choose to elaborate on this policy by developing and publishing additional agency-specific guidance.
