Stronger standards are needed to protect migratory birds and bats from wind projects that could be developed in and around Great Lakes, a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service official said May 15. "Our rare habitat is not being protected," Jeffrey C. Gosse, the agency's regional coordinator for hydro and wind power, said at a briefing before congressional aides and others. Though no wind projects have been constructed in the Great Lakes, a "handful" of projects have been built onshore, and "it's only a matter of time" before more projects are developed, Gosse said.
