Philadelphia-A federal court in New Jersey on March 10 sentenced a Swedish shipping company to pay a $1 million fine and a $400,000 community service assessment for attempting to conceal illegal discharges of oil-contaminated waste water into the ocean from one of its ships, the Justice Department announced March 11 (United States v. Holy House Shipping AB, D.N.J., No. 08-cr-782, 3/10/09).rnUnder the terms of a plea agreement approved by Judge Jerome B. Simandle of U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, Holy House Shipping AB also will serve three years of probation, during which it is required to implement an environmental management system and compliance program.rnReports by a third-party auditor hired by the company to ensure compliance will go to the Coast Guard, the probation office, the U.S. Attorney's Office, and the Justice Department's Environmental Crimes Section.
