PORTLAND, Ore.-Oregon's pioneering bottle recycling program was expanded Jan. 1 to include containers for bottled water, the result of a bill (S.B. 707) that was adopted in 2007.rnPreviously, a 5 cent deposit was required for only containers of beer, soda water, mineral water and carbonated soft drinks. Now containers of water and flavored water will be subject to the 5 cent deposit as well.rnUnder another change in the new law, retail outlets of 5,000 square feet or more will be required to accept returns of all brands and sizes of beverage containers for each kind of beverage that they sell. In other words, if a large store sells beer, then the store would have to take back all brands and sizes of beer containers. Currently, a retailer only has to take back bottles and cans of the brands that it carries.
