International postal services are the first global service industry to make a commitment to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and are making significant progress, the U.S. Postal Service said Oct. 28. The USPS statement referred to a report published in late September by the International Post Corp., a cooperative association, that said postal services across the globe made progress on their pledge to monitor their carbon dioxide emissions and collectively reduce those emissions by 20 percent by 2020. The International Post report said the global postal industry reduced its emissions by 597,000 metric tons from 2008 to 2009, representing a third of the reduction needed to meet the 20 percent goal.
