Governor Signs Legislation to Encourage Use Of Brownfields for Renewable Energy Projects

Incentives for developers to select brownfields in North Carolina as locations for renewable energy projects are included in a bill (S.B. 886) signed by Gov. Bev Perdue (D) Aug. 5.rnThe new law, Session Law No. 10-195, authorizes the establishment of "cleanfields" renewable energy demonstration parks at certain former manufacturing sites that are or may be subject to cleanup under the federalrnsuperfund law (42 U.S.C. Section 9605). Power companies that purchase energy generated from such clean-field sites qualify for three times the renewable energy credits they otherwise would be provided under existing state law.
