Port of Everett, Shipyard Operator Reach Agreement on Cleanup of Puget Sound Site

The Port of Everett and a shipyard op erator agreed to excavate nearly 15,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil near Puget Sound and transport it to an appropriate off-site disposal facility, under a proposed consent decree (State v. Port of Ever ett, Wash. Super. Ct., docket number unavailable, an nounced 11/10/11). Under the proposed settlement reached with the Washington Department of Ecology, the port and ESY Inc. will excavate 14,800 cubic yards of upland soil tainted by toxic metals and other hazardous substances, "including all contaminated soil near Puget Sound and soil containing high mass of contamination." They also will conduct dredging to remove all marine sediment where contamination exceeds standards, the Washington Department of Ecology said. The department said it will take public comment on the proposed settlement until Dec. 13, 2011.
