New York City Phaseout of Heavy Heating Oil Called Part of Long-Term Sustainability Plan

Use of No. 4 and No. 6 heavy heating oils will be phased out by New York City in a Clean Heat Campaign introduced as part of a broad long-term sustainability plan, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg (I) announced April 21. The two heating oil grades, known as residual oil, are "the dirtiest available" to burn in building boilers, the city said in announcing the promulgation of Department of Environmental Protection rules setting the phaseout.
