Green infrastructure (GI) is a new and emerging approach that shows great benefits in conserving the ecosystem and enhancing urban resilience. In this paper, we analyze the role of various types of GI and discuss how to integrate GI measures into urban planning to manage urban runoff. In addition, we are also interested in exploring the most effective places to develop GI. We develop a case study of New York City (NYC) urban areas based on the NYC Green Infrastructure Plan: A sustainable strategy for clean waterways (released in 2010). With the aid of geography information system (GIS), as well as studying the goals, planning, and practices of the Plan, we point out that GI should be designed citywide on the basis of the city's combined sewer overflow outfalls and type of land use. The experience of NYC can also provide a paradigm for other cities that are working on GI.
