Carbon Dioxide Allowances Sell for $1.89 At Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative Auction

Carbon dioxide allowances sold at the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative's recent auction were purchased for a clearing price of $1.89 per allowance, RGGI announced March 11. RGGI sold 41.9 million allowances for immediate use and another 2.1 million allowances for use after 2012. Each allowance allows the holder to emit one ton of carbon dioxide. The 10 RGGI states-New England states plus New York, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland-raised $83.4 million from the auction, which was held March 9 and was RGGI's 11th.
