EPA Says No Discharge Permits Needed For 'Good Samaritan' Mine Site Cleanups

The Environmental Protection Agency in a Dec. 12 memorandum to regional administrators has assured outside groups that they do not need Glean Water Act permits to voluntarily clean up abandoned mines. The memorandum is intended to clarify the legal vulnerability for "good Samaritans," who have no connection to mining activities but clean up "orphan mines" abandoned by their owners, EPA said.
