Colorado has some of the "strictest, most robust statewide rules in the country" governing oil and gas operations, Gov. John Hicken-looper (D) wrote in a response to 79 local government officials who criticized a state decision to sue Longmont for adopting its own drilling regulations. "Suing Longmont was a last- and not a first-resort for our administration," Hickenlooper wrote Sept. 26. "This decision was only made after attempts to resolve the state's concerns were unsuccessful." The municipal and county officials had written a letter Sept. 19 to Hickenlooper saying they were "troubled that the state would choose to spend valuable tax dollars to bring litigation against one of its own communities."
