The House began floor debate Sept. 20 on a Republican-led bill that would block greenhouse gas regulations and environmental rules impacting the coal industry, even as the Obama administration threatened to veto the measure. The House Rules Committee cleared the legislative package (H.R. 3409) Sept. 19. It combines five deregulatory bills, including four that have already passed the House, has been touted by Republican leaders as crucial to defending coal-fired power plants and the coal mining industry from an administration "war on coal."
