Report says Water Quality Assessments Should Focus on Monitoring, Modeling

The U.S. Geological Survey's National Water Quality Assessment Program (NAWQA) should continue to focus on monitoring rivers and basins across the country to support water quality status and trend assessments, according to a prepublication version of a National Research Council report.The report, released July 25, said additional USGS goals for the program are important, but can only be accomplished if "critical" basic data collection continues. An NRC committee tasked with assessing the scope of a USGS plan for the future of NAWQA also identified modeling initiatives as a vital activity that should be continued.
