EPA Finalizes Rule Authorizing Some Uses of Pesticide Methyl Bromide in 2012

The Environmental Protection Agency issued a final rule May 16 that authorizes some uses of the pesticide methyl bromide in 2012.The ozone-depleting substance is used as a soil fumi-gant and structural fumigant to control pests on certain plants, cured meats, and other goods. It was phased out in 2005, except for certain critical use exemptions, under the Clean Air Act and the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer (35 ER 693, 4/2/04).
