New York City Air Quality Reaches Best Level in 50 Years, Mayor Says

Air quality in New York City has reached its best level in more than 50 years, driven by the phasing out of the most heavily polluting heating oils, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg (I) announced. The city has achieved "dramatic reductions" in sulfur dioxide and soot levels after the 2007 adoption of its PlaNYC long-term sustainability blueprint, the mayor said Sept. 26 at a Climate Week NYC event. Since 2008, the city said, levels of sulfur dioxide have dropped by 69 percent; levels of particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns in diameter (PM-2.5) by 23 percent; and levels of nickel by 35 percent.
