Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz told the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee July 30 that bipartisan legislation on the management and storage of nuclear waste is "very promising" and takes a "thoughtful approach." Though Moniz said the Obama administration does not have an official position on the Nuclear Waste Administration Act of 2013 (S. 1240), he said the bill addresses key issues with nuclear waste management. More than one nuclear repository will "almost certainly" be necessary if nuclear power is to remain a significant part of the national energy portfolio, Moniz told a committee hearing on the legislation.
